The sprinkler may or may not cause damage to the pool depending on the pressure. What is more likely to happen is that water will continue to flow out of the sprinkler head even if it does not pop up. Therefore you could get a bunch of water under the pool and make it uneven and eventually lead to mold and mildew growth on the bottom of the pool. It would be recommended to cap this sprinkler off.
