Joan B. Rose has just been appointed as the Homer Nowlin Chair in Water Research at Michigan State University. Dr. Rose is an international expert in microbiological water quality and public health safety publishing more than 160 manuscripts. Her work has examined new molecular methods for waterborne pathogens such as Cryptosporidium and enteric viruses and source tracking techniques. She has been particularly involved in the study of recreational water quality, beach safety and coastal environments as well as water treatment and quantitative microbial risk assessment.

She is currently serving as the vice-chair of the Water Science and Technology Board of the National Academy of Sciences and serves on the Board of Life Sciences. Dr. Rose was named one of the top 21 most influential people in water in the 21st Century by Water Technology in 2000. She was awarded the 2001 Clarke Water Prize.
